The cucumber martini has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, emerging as a favorite among those who cherish its clean, refreshing taste. This cocktail’s history is a tapestry woven with the threads of classic mixology and modern flair, embodying a journey from obscurity to a staple on bar menus worldwide. The allure of cucumber in a cocktail lies in its ability to provide a burst of freshness, making it an ideal ingredient for drinks intended to soothe and invigorate in equal measure.
Ingredients
3–4 inches of English cucumber, diced, plus a thin slice for garnish
2 oz gin or vodka, depending on preference
1 oz elderflower liqueur
Fresh lemon juice (optional, to taste)
Ice cubes
Fresh mint or basil for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
Wash the cucumber thoroughly. Dice 3-4 inches for muddling and cut a thin slice for garnish.
If using lemon juice, squeeze fresh lemon to prepare the juice.
Gather your gin or vodka and elderflower liqueur.
Step 2: Muddle the Cucumber
Place the diced cucumber in the bottom of your cocktail shaker.
Use a muddler to gently press down and twist over the cucumber pieces to release their juice and flavor. Be careful not to over-muddle.
Step 3: Add the Liquor
Pour 2 oz of gin or vodka into the shaker.
Add 1 oz of elderflower liqueur to the mix.
If desired, add a splash of fresh lemon juice for an extra zing.
Step 4: Shake it Up
Fill the shaker with ice, making sure it covers the liquid ingredients.
Secure the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds or until the outside of the shaker feels very cold.
Step 5: Strain and Serve
Strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass to remove the ice and cucumber pieces.
Garnish with a thin slice of cucumber on the rim or floating on top. Optionally, add a sprig of fresh mint or basil for an aromatic touch.
Step 6: Enjoy
Serve immediately while cold for the best refreshing experience.
